Accompanied Loneliness

perfomance
2024

A three act performance, that can function as a guided tour, a listening experiment, or background noise to one’s own interaction with the space. Each act features a specific location and narrates an intervention that took place in Museum of Modern Art, Heliopolis Public Library and Bayt Al-Sinnari, going into details about the process and contesting each intervention and its methodologies.

Viewers are invited to participate in an act of collective listening that activates the project, the space becomes one of few limited opportunities of practising being in a public space with strangers joined by the same action that Cairo can offer. The participants are encouraged to be engaged to the level they see fit, and are reminded that they can choose to disengage at any given time either in space or in this act of listening.

In the first act, situated in the Museum of Modern Art, questions on assembling are brought forth, exploring a collective sleeping protest as a resilient methodology to the current context. In the second act, taking place at the Heliopolis Public Library, failed artistic attempts are centred, thinking on power structures and dynamics within groups. It invites listening to different modes of working together that we might already practise. In the third and final act, an alternative guided tour of Bayt Al-Sinnari is offered. Participants are invited to navigate around the house with a different story than the stagnant one that is usually narrated, focusing on the knowledge that can be produced by the act of collective movement. The three acts are grouped by sharing nuances on labour, failure and collectivity.

Accompanied Loneliness was part of The Subtle Revision of A Rigid Text Exhibition, curated by Studiokhana. The audio performance was developed along Fatma Elzahraa.
